Is LinkedIn better than purchasing data?

We often get asked whether we just use LinkedIn to build a database or whether it would be a good idea to look at other database sources, such as buying one.

These are the reasons we tend to use LinkedIn:

  1. It’s more accurate. Buying a database is notoriously inaccurate. People will have left; some may even have died! LinkedIn, however, tends to be kept up to date and so is a better source of data.
  2. It’s warmer. When we build a database on LinkedIn, we connect with people and send them some follow up emails. That means when we call them, they tend to know who we are. Compare that to buying a database – names who have never heard of you and are ‘cold’. You can see why the results from LinkedIn are much higher.
  3. You get better results. I’ve tested LinkedIn data versus bought data and every single time, LinkedIn outperforms the data that we buy in.
  4. You get access to better people. LinkedIn really does contain information to the top CEOs in the country and, in some cases, the world. I can search for these people directly and test different searches. Compare this to cold data where you ask for search criteria but it’s very hit and miss as to what you get back.
  5. It’s very inexpensive. Buying data can literally cost thousands of pounds and every time you want new data, you have to spend more. For less than £70 per month on LinkedIn, I’ve got access to all the data I can get my hands on.

Bottom line is, data from LinkedIn is cheaper, more accurate, warmer and gets better results than bought data – that’s why we use it over other sources.
