Personal Message from Helen

It’s been a really great week so far. Not only have I got numerous speaking events lined up for next week, but we’ve also just found out that I’m a finalist in the Switched On Business Awards this year. I knew it was worth buying that dress…

Entering business awards seems to be a really good and free way to market and promote ET this year and I completely recommend it. Don’t forget that I explain how to enter and win business awards on volume 3 of my CD – I promise you it’s well worth a look. Find out more by going to: http://www.exceptionalthinking.co.uk/CDVol3.htm

Remember, we'd also love to receive any articles that you'd like to be featured in here, so feel free to email them to us on info@exceptionalthinking.co.uk.

Bye for now
Helen

April Workshop: How to join a group at networking events

I think one of the hardest things at any networking event is walking into a room full of people and having to find people to talk to. In fact, I know that some people find it so difficult that they would rather stand in a corner on their own than go up to a group and interrupt them.

Here’s how to break the ice:

1. People on their own
Starting with the easiest, it makes quite a bit of sense to go up to and talk to people who are stood on their own. They’re not in a group, so you can’t interrupt them and they’re probably bored too so would welcome the company. All you need to do is approach them and just say “Mind if I join you?” and then make conversation. The hard thing about joining people on their own is getting away from them…but more about that next week.

2. People in groups of two
Now this is where body language comes in. Watch the pair to see what’s happening. Do they look bored? Do they look as though they want to get away from each other or are they deep in conversation? If they look as though they need rescuing, feel free to jump into the conversation. Again, just approach them and say “Mind if I join you?” Asking this question has never failed yet for me.

3. Groups of three
Groups of three are actually pretty easy to approach because usually two people will be talking and a third will be left out. Watch for groups of three as I always find them an easy group to join. Approach them with your question and you should be on your way to having a chat.

4. Groups of four or more
Groups of four or more are quite difficult to approach and I tend to steer clear of them at an event. It’s too easy for them to pair off into couples and be deep in conversation. Stick to the people on their own, people in groups and groups of three and you’ll be fine.

I’ll be covering how to get business through networking at our next workshop coming up at the end of April.
